Duration of course: One year

Level / equivalence: Level 3 / 4. Equivalent to A Level, BTEC Foundation Diploma

UCAS points: Distinction 286 points, Merit 225 points, pass 165 points. A level at A* only offers 140 points.

Progression: Prepares students for practical art degrees at university

Entry requirements

3 GCSE /IGCSE grades A* - C or equivalent including English and Art. Any applicant with a  strong  portfolio of work and a strong desire to progress will be considered. Applications from mature students are welcomed. The College takes into consideration alternative qualifications and relevant work experience.



Core Skills

You will be supported through 8 units in 3 key stages. You will develop a range of practical skills using a variety of media. These will be explored through themed projects and will include 2d and 3d work. You will explore: painting, textiles, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture and digital art practice. You will develop knowledge, skills and understanding in historical and contemporary art practice. In the third and final stage, you will be asked to produce a final major project on your own chosen theme.

Foundation Diploma in Graphic design or Fine art

If you are sure you want to be a graphic designer or Fine artist then you may opt to study a Foundation in Graphic design or Fine art where the course structure is similar to art and design but evidently your development will be in your chosen specialism.

Assessment

The first two stages, exploratory and pathway, will be internally assessed by the college through digital photagraphs of your art work. The third stage, confirmatory, will be externally assessed with photographs of your final major project being sent to the examiner.

Course requirements

You will need to communicate with your tutor and fellow students and so a computer with broadband connection is essential. You will also need headphones and microphone for interactive virtual classroom sessions. A digital camera with USB lead or card reader will be necessary to send your tutor photographs of your creations.

Apart from the ICT requirements you will of course need art making materials. You don't have to spend a fortune as almost anything can be recycled into art so scout around.
