5 reasons to study Art & Design

Sculpture wood

Art & Design subjects offer students a great learning experience, providing much more than just the chance to develop creative skills.

1. Problem Solving

One of the core skills that any art & design student can develop during their studies. Creative curriculums are structured with open briefs, issuing students a task that can be interpreted in any way they like. Unlike several subjects, you are given a blank page to start from, encouraging students to form their own answer and produce a creative solution that meets the brief.

2. Observational skills

Developing an eye for detail is something that any art & design student will improve during their course. As design courses are subjective, tutors will issue feedback and ideas on pieces that will help broaden the students thinking and help them see subjects in new lights. All contributing to the development of their observational skills; seeing topics from other peoples’ points of view.

3. Provides a balance

We all know that the brain has two halves, the scientific half, and the creative half. Studying arts offers the chance to challenge a different side of your brain. There is no reason why you can’t study the arts alongside sciences and other subjects. It will help ensure you’re challenging both sides of your brain and keeping your thought processes open and broad.

4. A platform for self-expression

Some students can find it hard to express themselves and showcase their voice. The arts provide a platform to do just this. Using materials that the student is comfortable with, they can express their thoughts and interpretations freely, enabling them develop their confidence and channel their voice through a creative form.

5. Development of soft skills and emotions

Art & design subjects encourage emotions such as empathy and patience. Showcasing work and viewing others, helps students learn how to listen and interpret subjective feedback and appreciate other peoples’ opinions, all invaluable transferable skills.

Art & design subjects offer an abundance of skill building and thought development. Find out about our art & design subjects and see how our online college of art and design could be your first step into the creative industries.
