How it works

Students receive access to their own online studio space where they can work through their Art course, submit pieces and find support. You will have unlimited access to course units and assignments, as well as supporting resources, video tutorials, step-by-step guides and other helpful materials to help you achieve the best A Level grade possible. Once you complete assignments or work units you will upload photos of your artwork to your college e-studio for assessment and constructive, friendly written feedback on how to progress. Additionally, students are invited to discuss, with an industry experienced and qualified personal tutor, their progress and receive face to face verbal feedback, encouragement, and support. Students may also benefit from relationships with their fellow online students as they can view profiles and comment on each other's work if they wish.

Assessment

Your coursework and portfolio of artwork and art theory will be assessed throughout your A Level Art course. Our specialist tutors goal is to help you achieve the best grade possible, so you will receive regular feedback.

Your Final Major Project will be assessed externally by the exam board and this will decide your final grade. You will be kept informed every step of the way on how to improve your work.

Structure of the course

The course comprises  4 units (2x AS and 2x A2):

AS Unit 1. Portfolio

The emphasis of this component will be on the development of understanding and skills using an appropriate range of materials, processes and techniques. Students should produce a collection of materials that exemplifies work carried out during the AS course.

Each student must include in their portfolio:

  • a selection of thoughtfully presented work that demonstrates the breadth and depth of the course of study
  • at least one extended collection of work or project, based on an idea, concept, theme or issue. This should demonstrate the student’s ability to sustain work from an initial starting point to a realisation. It should include evidence of their ability to research and develop ideas and link their work in a meaningful way to relevant critical/contextual materials.

AS Unit 2

Separate question papers will be provided for each title. These will consist of a choice of five questions to be used as starting points. Students are required to select one. Students will be provided with examination papers on 1 February, or as soon as possible after that date.

Preparatory period – from 1 February

  • Following receipt of the paper, students should consider the starting points and select one.
  • Preparatory work should be presented in any suitable format, such as mounted sheets, design sheets, sketchbooks, workbooks, journals, models and maquettes.
  • Supervised time – 10 hours
  • Following the preparatory period, students must complete 10 hours of unaided, supervised time.
  • The first 3 hours of the supervised time must be consecutive.
  • In the 10 hours, students must produce a finished outcome or a series of related finished outcomes, informed by their preparatory work.
  • These units are effectively repeated in year 2 but work is expected to be at a higher level. This is reflected in a 15-hour exam (supervised time) in year 2

DON”T LIKE EXAMS OR WRITING ESSAYS AND WANT TWICE THE UCAS POINTS FOR THE SAME AMOUNT OF WORK – see our range of specialist Foundation Diplomas! You can start these at any time and complete them in a year! A-Levels have to be started in September and will take 2 years to complete. An A-Level art on its own won’t get you into a top University but a Foundation Diploma will!
