Course Introduction

The GCSE Music Course currently follows the OCR specification and includes an opportunity for students to develop as performers, composers and rounded musicians.

The qualification consists of three main components:

  • Performance – developing performance skills on your instrument(s)
  • Composing - developing simple to more advanced composition skills and knowledge
  • Listening & Appraising – understanding musical theory and knowledge of a wide range of musical styles & genres

GCSE Music provides the opportunity for learners to acquire and develop the knowledge and skills needed to progress to Higher Education study. The course also enables learners to develop social and emotional skills such as communication and confidence through meeting other like-minded students from across the globe!

The course is led by Paul Willsher, a highly experienced Secondary Head of Music with over 16 years of experience teaching KS3 and GCSE Music, Music Technology and A Level Music. Paul also coordinates and leads our Music courses at OCAD. Originally a Brass & Percussion specialist, he comes from a background of Brass Bands and Big Bands. He then discovered Music Technology and Music Production whilst at university and began developing his combined knowledge and skills throughout his degree at the University of Salford.

Paul is here to support you every step of the way, so please contact him if you have any queries or questions about the course on: mr.willsher@artcoursework.com

How it works

Throughout the course, students are guided through the various units via online lessons which can be viewed at a time convenient for the individual, whether live, or recorded. Live lessons are taught twice weekly, which are also recorded for students to catch up on, or to watch again. Lessons will initially focus on developing composing skills and listening & appraising. One-to-one support sessions are available, if required, with the tutor to discuss each unit and assignment, and provide feedback on progress. The course begins with Induction where students discuss their previous background and desired route through the course and beyond. Students are guided through an overview of the course and what is required.

Assessment

Feedback is provided on each piece of work and each assignment set for students. This can be via chat or interactive through the sharing of submitted work. Final submissions are marked in accordance with the specification assessment criteria and moderated with colleagues also experienced with the OCR specification.
