The Online Level 2 Art and Design Course is designed to give young students access to continue their studies at Foundation level. This course is the first step in your art and design journey.

This exciting course has a practical focus, and is 100% coursework based. All coursework will be assessed online by an examination board officer. It will help you to develop your knowledge and understanding of art as a discipline and also give you the confidence to explore your own creative style. You will finish the course with a portfolio that displays a wide range of your work and capabilities.


Successful graduates earn a Level 2 qualification that is equivalent to achieving GCSE grades 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, or 4. This qualification is accredited by the UK’s largest vocational awarding body, SEG ABC Awards. The art and design course has been carefully curated to give student professional design practice as well as practical skills.

Entry requirements


To enrol in our online Level 2 Art and Design course, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be aged 14 years or over or mature younger student.
  • No previous art or design qualifications required.

Our Level 2 Art and Design course is taken completely online, so students must have access to a strong internet connection as well as basic art materials to complete the course. Art materials are not included as part of the course.


Study Options


Get your Art and Design qualification in a way that suits you:

  • Part-time programmes: available all year around – enrolling now
  • Full-time programmes (6 months): Start any time. Portfolio must be completed by mid-June. Students will require at least 6 months to complete the course. Students can continue the following year if they fail to submit coursework by the mid-June deadline.

Accreditations 


Our online Level 2 Art and Design course is accredited by SEG ABC, one of the nation’s leading education awarding bodies. Graduates finish the course with a fully recognised art and design qualification. An exam registration fee of £53.20 will be payable to SEG Awards for full certification.

How it works

As an online student of OCAD's Level 2 Art and Design course, you'll be given access to your own virtual studio, with video tutorials, step-by-step guides, portfolio work, and more. This will be a space where you can work through your units and assignments at your own pace. 


You will also upload your coursework to your virtual studio and receive feedback and assessment grades. An experienced and qualified personal tutor will provide you with verbal feedback, encouragement, and support.


You can also access additional optional live enrichment classes through your virtual studio. These are available most weeks during term times. 



Assessment

As you progress through your art and design course, you'll receive regular feedback to encourage progress and development. You'll also have access to online tuition to help you achieve your goals.


Your final major project will be evaluated by an external exam board, who will decide your final grade. 


Structure of the course

Our online Level 2 Art and Design course comprises 4 core units and 2 main stages: the Exploratory stage and the Pathway stage. 


Your artwork will be assessed against the following 4 units:


A/602/6142 Investigating information and developing research techniques – Mandatory Unit


K/602/6251 Developing and handling media and materials – Mandatory Unit


M/602/6252 Recognising and applying visual language and formal elements within production techniques – Mandatory Unit


A/602/6254 Working to set briefs – Mandatory Unit


The Exploratory stage


The Exploratory stage of the course provides an opportunity for you to gain a deeper understanding of what art and design is. During this stage, you will use a range of materials and processes, and develop your skills in drawing, painting, mixed media (collage), digital art, and 3D (sculpture).


The Pathway stage 


The Pathway stage gives students the opportunity to delve deeper into a particular field of study. The choice is completely yours, guidance will be provided by the tutors based on your work from the Exploratory stage to help find the subject that best aligns with your interests and goals.
