Black and White Drawing Portfolio - Task 7 PORTRAITURE

Students can choose any media for this task. Most, as you will see, use pencil or charcoal. After weeks of learning about tonal drawing, techniques on 'seeing' and observing, and also learning composition and contextual understanding, students produce their outcomes.

These final outcomes come after preparing own photography references, doing some trials of various features to determine decisions such as the style of the piece, media use, scale to draw and overal details.

Level 2 students mostly start this course with no, or little, experience of drawing. This portfolio shows just how far our students come by task 7 of their first phase portfolio. Many of our students are exceptional talents, but let's not forget that many also have had to work for many hours to refine skills you see here. We are so proud of the standard of this work! Well done Level students 2022-2023!

In this series I will be showing you how to layer an oils painting over a pencil sketch. This approach gives you an opportunity to ensure that your drawing is solid before handling brushes. So it’s an ideal exercise to learn painting techniques in oils.
